The junior coalition partner in Bulgaria's Socialist-led government is calling for early elections by the end of the year, underscoring the depth of the Balkan country's months-long political crisis.

The leader of the mainly ethnic Turkish MRF party Lyutvi Mestan called for early elections Thursday following the poor performance of the Socialist party in last month's European elections, which exposed the limited public support for the government.

The governing coalition of the Socialists and the MRF party, which started its four-year term last May, commands only 120 seats in the 240-seat parliament and relies on the tacit support of a nationalist party.

The center-right GERB party won 30.4 percent in the European vote, while the Socialists trailed behind with 18.9 percent. The MRF party was third with 17.3 percent.
