An Orthodox Church bishop in Bulgaria has been found dead on a beach in the Black Sea city of Varna.
Police say Kiril was found Tuesday, wearing a diving mask and a snorkel, and that he apparently had drowned. Police said there was no sign of violence but that an autopsy will be performed.
The 59-year-old bishop, known for his opulent lifestyle, temporarily led the Bulgarian Orthodox Church after the death of Patriarch Maxim in November 2012. But he was replaced by the election of Neofit as the new patriarch in February.
Clerics in Bulgaria's Orthodox Church use only one name.
Kiril was among 11 Orthodox bishops who were exposed as former agents of the communist-era secret services in Bulgaria.
His funeral has been scheduled on Thursday.
