A Facebook campaign is aiming to give Finland its biggest gift ever to mark 100-year anniversary of its independence.
Supporters want Norway to move one of its eastern borders 65 feet west giving Finland the peak of the 4,478-ft. tall Halti mountain, which would instantly become the highest point within the country.
The campaign, titled “Halti as an anniversary gift,” has won the backing of the head of Norway’s Mapping Authority, according to The Local.
The current highest point in Finland is one of Halti’s spurs, Hálditšohkka, which rises 4,344 feet above sea level. Halti isn’t even on the list of Norway’s highest 200 peaks.
“We would not have to give away any part of Norway. It would barely be noticeable,” Bjørn Geirr Harsson, the retired employee of the Norwegian Mapping Authority who dreamed up the proposal, told broadcaster NRK. “And I’m sure the Finns would greatly appreciate getting it.”
Harsson said he had the idea in 1972 when flying along the border to take measurements. He said his son probably started the Facebook campaign, which has more than 5,000 likes as of Friday.
Anne Cathrine Frøstrup, the leader of the Norwegian Mapping Authority, told NRK that she thinks “it’s a very good idea.”
There was no immediate word if the Norwegian government is considering the proposal.
