Jordan's planning minister says the government is studying possible labor policy changes, such as allowing Syrian refugees to work in sectors typically filled by migrant workers.
International donors have called on refugee host countries to put more refugees to work so they will be less reliant on dwindling aid funds. Close to 4 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries since 2011, including 630,000 who settled in Jordan.
Jordan struggles with high unemployment, but employs large numbers of migrants in construction and agriculture and has been reluctant to formalize Syrian labor.
Planning Minister Imad Fakhoury told The Associated Press on Sunday that Jordan is looking at policies that "will hopefully open up possibilities for Syrians in imported labor categories." He says the top priority remains keeping Jordanians in their jobs.
