An American man is accused of flying nearly halfway around the world on a mission to kill his ex-wife’s husband, who lives in Australia.
Police say Jeffrey Hooten, 49, of Texas, confronted Greg Williams, 56, in the driveway outside of his home on Tuesday in Somersby, north of Sydney.
Hooten fired a crossbow bolt at Williams, which missed him and hit a laptop he was carrying, before smashing an axe into Williams’ head, authorities told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
"He brings out this tomahawk and he swings over the top with his right hand and I managed to block him a bit, but he still got me on the noggin," Williams said.
A passerby then broke up the fight and police were able to arrest Hooten, who was charged with wounding with intent to murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
According to court documents, Hooten arrived in Australia last week after flying more than 8,000 miles from Bellaire, Texas, outside of Houston. He was staying at a motel in the area and had booked a flight home for Friday, ABC reports.
Hooten appeared in Gosford Local Court Wednesday but did not apply for bail.
During the bail hearing, it was noted that Hooten divorced Stephanie Williams in 2009, who later married Greg Williams, The Daily Telegraph reports.
Williams is recovering after being taken to a hospital to get stitches on his head.
