A flock stray flamingos found swimming on an icy Siberian river in Russia

Near the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, a fisherman was met with an unusual sight while out on his boat: a stray group of flamingos.

Nikolai Skalon, a zoologist at Kemerovo State University, told the Tass news agency that the seven flamingos likely had flown off course during their yearly winter migration from Kazakhstan, going north when they should have headed south.

One flamingo was later caught and taken to a nearby zoo.

The fisherman, Pavel Shanushnikov, spotted the flamingos swimming on the icy Tom River on Sunday. Temperatures in Novosibirsk last week ranged from 0 to -3 Celsius (32 to 26.6 Fahrenheit), with over 11 centimeters (4.4 inches) of snow on the ground.
