Lithuanian police have arrested a 57-year-old man suspected of killing three elderly women and a social worker in a three-day stabbing spree in a rural village.
Police said Rimantas Bekintis was arrested Thursday after an 81-year-old woman and a 52-year-old social worker were fatally stabbed in the village of Kraziai. While investigating the crime, police found the bodies of two other women, aged 55 and 74, who had been stabbed to death in their homes Monday and Tuesday.
Investigators said Bekintis pleaded guilty to murder charges, saying he killed the women while robbing them. He could face life in prison.
Kraziai is known in Lithuania as the site of a 19th-century massacre where Russian forces sent to demolish a Catholic church slaughtered the villagers who tried to protect it.
