Four people are dead in Trinidad and Tobago after a motorist swerved over a median and slammed into an incoming car carrying the twin-island nation's top judge.

Police have not disclosed the names of the four dead in the car that jumped the median, saying they will first contact relatives about the early Sunday crash on the outskirts of Port-of-Spain.

The newspaper Trinidad Express says the country's chief justice and two of his bodyguards were badly injured in the crash. It says eyewitnesses report the injured were traveling in a Toyota Prado when the other car crossed over the median.

The newspaper says acting Chief Justice Wendell Kangaloo has undergone emergency surgery and is in critical condition.
