Police say they have killed three men after they attacked a bank and a police station in northern Nigeria.

Bauchi state police chief told The Associated Press Friday that both attacks took place at about noon Thursday in the town of Darazo.

Mohammed Indabawa said the police killed three suspects including a man who had accidentally detonated a bomb he was holding and blew off his own hand. He said the man was holding a homemade bomb which he was about to throw at the police station.

Indabawa said the police had arrested three suspects, but that it was not immediately clear if any particular group was behind the attacks.

Northern police have previously blamed similar bomb attacks on a radical Muslim sect locally known as Boko Haram.
