PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haitian police say a Haitian man was killed and an Irish woman received minor injuries when they were beaten with a hammer during a break-in at the orphanage where they worked.
Police inspector Gilbert Conseillant said Monday that three men demanded money when they showed up Thursday at the Kay Christine orphanage in a rural village in the mountains above the capital of Port-au-Prince.
Gena Heraty of Ireland runs the special needs program for the orphanage, home to about 400 children. Conseillant says Heraty gave the attackers 400 euros, but they wanted more. The attackers struck Heraty several times and beat night watchman Cesar "Major" Edward, who later died.
The police inspector says authorities believe at least one of the attackers was once an orphan who lived at the home.
