RICHMOND, British Columbia —  Americans Shani Davis and Trevor Marsicano won gold and silver medals at 1,500 meters Thursday at the world single distances speedskating championships.

Shani Davis finished in 1 minute, 46.19 seconds at Richmond Olympic Oval, the speedskating venue for next year's Vancouver Games. He was followed by Marsicano in 1:46.30 and bronze medalist Denny Morrison of Canada in 1:47.05.

Morrison entered the race as the defending world champion. Davis, however, was the favorite after breaking the Canadian's world record at a World Cup event in Salt Lake City last week

Davis's time of 1:41.80 in that race shaved about one-third of a second off Morrison's mark that was set last spring in Calgary, Alberta.
