Politician Killed in Spain Basque Region

Friday, March 07, 2008

MADRID, Spain —  A former Spanish city councilman was shot and killed Friday in the Basque region, the Basque Interior Ministry said, raising tensions two days ahead of national elections.

The politician died after being rushed to a local hospital, Basque police told The Associated Press. Police say the man, Isaias Carrasco, was shot several times.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Spain is holding a general election Sunday amid tight security over fears of an attack by the Basque separatist group ETA.

Eyewitnesses said the politician was attacked as he emerged from his house in the Basque town of Arrasate with his wife and daughter. Spanish newspapers said Carrasco was 42.

An unidentified witness in Arrasate told CNN+ television she heard three shots from her home, looked out the window and saw the politician's wife and daughter screaming "murderers, murderers." She said the politician's chest was bloody.

ETA has set off a series of small bombs in recent months in the Basque country _ mostly late at night. The group also killed two Spanish policemen just across the border in France on Dec. 1.
