Former Austrian chancellor Fred Sinowatz dies

Monday, August 11, 2008

VIENNA, Austria —  Former Austrian Chancellor Fred Sinowatz has died at the age of 79. The current chancellor, Alfred Gusenbauer, announced the death Monday. No cause was given.

Sinowatz took power in 1983 when Chancellor Bruno Kreisky resigned following elections that saw his Socialist Party lose its majority in parliament.

Sinowatz resigned three years later when Kurt Waldheim was elected to the figurehead post of the Austrian presidency.

Waldheim won despite accusations that he hid service with a World War II German unit accused of Balkan atrocities, and over the opposition of Sinowatz's Socialists.

Sinowatz is survived by a son and a daughter.
