Workers find crashed car, victim off Skyline Drive
WAYNESBORO, Va. – A Shenandoah National Park official says a maintenance crew working along Skyline Drive has found a car that plummeted off the road, killing the driver.
Park spokeswoman Karen Beck-Herzog says the crew noticed a patch of flattened vegetation along the scenic highway north of Waynesboro on Thursday. Workers followed the path about 500 feet down a steep slope to discover the crashed blue Suzuki. The identity of the female driver was not immediately available.
Beck-Herzog said Augusta County and park personnel had to deal with steep, rattlesnake-infested terrain to recover the woman's body. She said officials believe the accident occurred within the last few days.
The National Parks Service is investigating.
