The Pacific County, Wash., sheriff says a 9-year-old boy was seriously injured when his 10-year-old brother shot him in the chest while target practicing.

The boy was flown from southwest Washington to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Sheriff Scott Johnson said the Friday afternoon shooting at a home east of Raymond appears to have been accidental. The sheriff says the younger boy had asked his stepfather if he could go outside and join his brother, who was shooting a .22-caliber rifle at a target and the younger boy received permission.

Johnson says the 9-year-old was 3 to 5 feet from the target when he was hit.

The boy's grandmother starting driving him toward town. She met a responding ambulance along the way and medics took him initially to a local hospital.

Johnson said he was scheduled to discuss the case with the prosecutor. He adds that the state's Child Protective Services has contacted his office as well.
