Utah grandmother dies shielding 11-year-old grandson in fatal NYC taxi crash

He lost more than his grandma — he lost his best friend.

An 11-year-old Utah boy whose beloved granny brought him to the city for his birthday and died protecting him in a taxi crash on their way to their hotel from the airport still doesn’t know she’s dead.

Suzanne Nicholson, 60, died shielding little Gabe Larsen from an oncoming garbage truck that slammed into their cab on the rain-slicked Long Island Expressway about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“They were best friends, always texting and calling each other. I’m sure he’ll be very devastated,” Gabe’s dad, Dean Larsen, told The Post. “We haven’t even thought about when or how to bring it up.”

Dean and his wife, Jaime, flew out Saturday to be by their son’s side when he awoke from a medically induced coma at Elmhurst Hospital, where he’s being treated for a concussion, a punctured lung and rib, and a broken collarbone and pelvis.

“It was such a horrific crash, I don’t understand how he survived it. It was pretty amazing what his grandmother did for him,” the grateful father said. “It was his birthday, and she was bringing him over here to celebrate.”
