SALT LAKE CITY – Authorities are stepping up the search for an armed mountain man who has spent five years or more breaking into dozens of cabins across a rugged area of southern Utah.
Kane County Sheriff's Detective Dathan Chamberlain tells The Associated Press that investigators believe the man is still roaming the mountains based on recent cabin break-ins where food and clothing was taken.
Detectives are distributing wanted posters and are warning cabin owners to be on the lookout with summer approaching. They've identified the suspect as 44-year-old Troy James Knapp based on fingerprints lifted from one cabin and surveillance photos taken outside another.
A Kane County arrest warrant issued in January charges Knapp with three burglaries and a weapons charge.
