US drug czar calls for crackdown on pill mills

Published November 29, 2015

Associated Press

The White House drug czar says Florida is the source for deadly prescription pill abuses ravaging Kentucky and urged its governor to rethink repealing a prescription-monitoring program.

But Florida Gov. Rick Scott says he won't budge from his recommendation to repeal the tracking system.

White House Drug Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske (ker-lih-KOW'-skee) said Tuesday in Louisville that Florida "pill mills" attract drug dealers and addicts from states such as Kentucky. He says the mills are directly responsible for drug-related deaths in the state.

A spokesman for the Florida governor previously said Scott is not only concerned about the $500,000 price tag to run the program but also of having the government track citizens' personal use of prescription drugs.
