SAVANNAH, Ga. – Family and friends of Troy Davis plan to gather for a memorial service in Savannah in advance of the funeral for the Georgia inmate who was executed last week.
A memorial was scheduled for Friday night at the New Life Apostolic Temple. Davis' funeral will be held at a different Savannah church Saturday.
Davis was executed in Georgia last week for the 1989 murder of Savannah police officer Mark MacPhail. Davis insisted he was innocent and his case attracted thousands of supporters. However, courts ultimately upheld his death sentence.
No itinerary has been released for the Friday memorial. Davis' funeral Saturday is scheduled to feature speeches by leaders of the NAACP and Amnesty International and a eulogy from the pastor of the Atlanta church where Martin Luther King Jr. preached.
