Authorities in Indiana say at least ten people have been killed in violent storms that spawned tornadoes across a wide swath of southern Indiana.

Maj. Chuck Adams of the Clark County Sheriff's Department said late Friday that one person had died in hard-hit Henryville.

Adams adds the death toll could rise once search and rescue crews begin to comb through the town in daylight.

Earlier, authorities said four people were killed in the Chelsea area, three people died in Scott County and two people were killed in nearby Ripley County.

The powerful storms that stretched from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes have killed at least 16 people in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
