The sheriff of a Texas border town said Tuesday that his office is working with Mexican and U.S. authorities after 132 inmates in a Mexican prison made a brazen escape through a man-made tunnel.
"We've upped our security along the border and at rivers," Thomas Herrera, the Maverick County sheriff said.
Herrera oversees 30 deputies and said he has not increased staff, but made appeals to the community to report anything suspicious.
Susie Rodriguez, 28, works at The Border Café in Eagle Pass. She said patrons are tense and concerned about previous crimes these escapees committed.
"We have our regular customers," she said. "And we'll definitely keep an eye on anything suspicious."
Officials said Tuesday they have found three inmates thought to have escaped, lowering the number of escaped prisoners to 129.
Federal police units and Mexican troops, including 70 members of an elite military special forces unit, are searching for inmates who fled the prison in Piedras Negras, a city across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.
They escaped through a tunnel 21 feet long and 4 feet in diameter on Monday and then cut their way through a chain link barrier and escaped onto a neighboring property.
