Police testimony shows that an Alabama woman charged with running her granddaughter to death told police the girl wanted to be outside exercising.
Etowah County sheriff's investigator Mike Jones testified Wednesday about a statement that Joyce Garrard made to him and another officer after the death of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin in 2012.
Jones says Garrard told him the girl wanted to be outside running. Earlier testimony showed the woman claimed the girl wanted to get faster after finishing second in a race at school.
The defense says Garrard is innocent of a capital murder charge and didn't mean to harm the girl.
Prosecutors say Garrard made the girl run for hours as punishment for a lie. The girl eventually passed out and died in a hospital three days later.
