Authorities searching for a man accused of shooting at a deputy sheriff in Virginia are focusing on a church near Buena Vista, a small city in the Blue Ridge mountains.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says authorities received information Monday that 35-year-old William Evan Hall of Abingdon might be in the church.
State police Sgt. Rick Garletts says Hall fired at least twice at a Rockbridge County deputy after he was pulled over for speeding this weekend. Garletts says the deputy wasn't injured.
Police say Hall fled, and a chase ended after officers lost sight of Hall's vehicle. It later was found abandoned.
Investigators say they believe the suspect broke into a residence and stole clothing and a gun about six hours after the shooting.
Local news outlets report that schools were closed Monday.
