A jury has convicted a man of raping and murdering a San Francisco Opera employee 17 years ago.

The San Francisco Chronicle says 61-year-old Otis Hughes was convicted Monday of killing Karen Wong.

Her brother found the half-naked body of the 39-year-old under a blanket in her apartment in 1991.

Police said the home was ransacked.

Shortly after the killing, Hughes was sent to prison for burglary. After his 2008 release, he provided a DNA sample that authorities say matched evidence at the murder scene.

His attorney argued that Hughes might have had consensual sex with Wong and her boyfriend was more likely to be the killer.

The attorney says Hughes, who could face life in prison, will appeal the verdict.
