Renderings for the design of a New York City church destroyed on Sept. 11 show a structure with a large dome reminiscent of the great Eastern Orthodox churches.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/1afj4M2 ) says St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church will have a large ribbed dome, similar to that of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It's designed by Santiago Calatrava, who's also the architect of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.

The renderings were recently posted on Calatrava's website. They were first noted by the New York Post on Tuesday.

The church will be much larger than the small church destroyed on Sept. 11.

The new church will be located on the south end of the National September 11 Memorial. It will house a nondenominational bereavement center.

It's scheduled to open by early 2016.
