A once-prominent Orthodox rabbi who secretly videotaped women undressing and using a changing room at a Jewish ritual bath has written a public apology letter from jail.
Rabbi Bernard Freundel was sentenced in May to approximately 6 ½ years in prison. Freundel apologized and spoke at length during his sentencing. But in a letter published Wednesday in Washington Jewish Week, he said: "No matter how many times I attempt to apologize, it will never be enough." The letter comes ahead of the Jewish new year and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.
Freundel acknowledged as part of a plea agreement that from 2009 to 2014 he secretly recorded women in a showering and changing area of the National Capital Mikvah in Washington, a ritual cleansing bath he worked to have built.
