Police: Sex offender, teen from Florida apprehended in Louisiana after 40-mile chase

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Authorities say they have apprehended a registered sex offender traveling with a 16-year-old girl after a high-speed chase through Louisiana swampland.

Lafayette police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton (MOO'-tawn) says the 40-mile chase started late Wednesday near Baton Rouge. Troopers used a spike strip to stop the truck driven by 41-year-old Steven Myers, who's registered as a sex offender in Florida.

Officials say the teen was in the truck with Myers, of Plant City, near Tampa. She's been missing from nearby Valrico since last week.

Mouton says Myers exited the truck with a knife and officers subdued him with stun guns. Both the girl and Myers were reported hospitalized in critical condition with stab wounds Thursday. Police aren't sure how they were injured. They say charges for Myers are pending.
