Police in South Carolina have shot and killed a robbery suspect they say took a hostage at a discount store.
Hardeeville spokesman Juan Singleton said Jasper County Deputy Dan Morgan has an injured foot, but is expected to survive. The hostage also escaped with minor injuries during the shootout about 8 a.m. Monday at a Dollar General.
Singleton says people at a nearby motel called 911 after seeing a masked man walk into the store on U.S. Highway 17 in Hardeeville, about 120 miles south of Columbia.
The city spokesman says he doesn't know how long the hostage situation lasted or whether the hostage ran away during or after the shooting.
Coroner Martin Sauls says the gunman died at a hospital and hasn't been identified.
The races of the suspect and officer haven't been released.
