Authorities in Virginia are identifying a man fatally shot after police say he approached officers with multiple knives, yelling at them to shoot him.
News outlets report Hopewell Police Chief John Keohane says officers were called to the Twin Rivers apartment complex in the city about 20 miles south of Richmond on Sunday afternoon for reports of a stabbing.
In the parking lot, Keohane says officers encountered 61-year-old Boyd Keith Ballard of Hopewell, carrying multiple knives. He says an officer repeatedly asked Ballard to drop the knives, but Ballard continued to approach and raised a knife. Keohane says the officer fired, striking Ballard once in the abdomen.
Keohane says Ballard died at a hospital. The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital. He says the investigation was turned over to Virginia State Police.
