Police are investigating what they say is an apparent triple homicide after discovering of three bodies inside a home Thursday in a tiny community in southern Montana, officials said.
A neighbor in the town of Belfry, about 60 miles southwest of Billings, asked authorities to check on the home after not hearing from its residents since Tuesday, Carbon County Sheriff Josh McQuillan said.
McQuillan and two deputies arrived to find three dead adults inside. He declined to identify them or their relationship with each other.
Officials from the sheriff's office and the Montana Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation said the people were victims of a homicide, but they declined to say how they were killed.
A person of interest in the deaths has been identified, McQuillan said. That person was not in custody Thursday, but law-enforcement officials believe there is no danger to the community of a little more than 200 people, Department of Justice spokesman John Barnes said.
Barnes declined to elaborate, saying that releasing more details could compromise the investigation.
Bob Cichosz, who runs the Belfry Country Store, told the Billings Gazette that the first residents of the house, a married couple in their 70s, moved to Belfry about four years ago.
When the husband became ill last year, the wife's sister and her husband moved in, Cichosz said.
One of the family members visited the store on Tuesday for information about their missing dog, Cichosz said. "They're pretty nice people when we talked to them," he said.
