A Catholic school outside Philadelphia has banned one of its students from attending prom because the teen no longer has a date.
Amanda Dougherty shelled out nearly $1,000 for tickets, a dress and new shoes for Friday night's dance at Archbishop John Carroll High School, KWY-TV reported.
When her date backed out last week, Dougherty, 17, was told by school officials she couldn't attend on her own.
A statement from the Office of Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia explained that many dances throughout the year are held that do not require a date, but it views prom as "a special social event where a date is required to attend."
Dougherty, who began shopping for dresses in December, called the decision "sickening."
