The ousted No. 2 official at the Secret Service has a new job inside the Homeland Security Department. But no one's saying what it is.
Alvin "A.T." Smith earned as much at $183,000 a year running the Secret Service's day-to-day operations. He held that post while the agency suffered its most embarrassing scandals. He resigned as deputy director under pressure earlier this week.
Smith's employment shuffle appears to be highly unorthodox. He'll be taking an unspecified job inside the highly regarded Homeland Security Investigations unit in U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
But no one will disclose Smith's new job title, his responsibilities or how much public salary he's earning. It's a mystery whether Smith is investigating cases, shuffling paperwork behind a desk or supervising agents.
