Off-Duty Chicago Police Officer Shot, Killed

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

An off-duty Chicago police officer has been shot and killed while working as a security guard at a grocery store.

Police say the officer was shot at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago's West Side. Authorities say he was trying to stop a burglary at the store.

The officer was taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Residents say it's the second time in recent weeks that the store has been burglarized.

No suspects are in custody.

Police are still investigating. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy was speaking to other officers and family members at the hospital. He was expected to address reporters late Thursday.
