New York police are investigating the death of a transgender woman as a possible hate crime.
Police say the victim, 21-year-old Islan Nettles, died Thursday, five days after she was attacked.
They say she and a friend, another transgendered woman, were out Saturday night in Harlem when they ran into a group of men. Police say one pounced, punching Nettles in the face. A witness has told police that men in the group including the suspect made anti-gay remarks.
Nettles was taken to a hospital where she fell into a coma and later died.
Twenty-year-old Paris Wilson has been arrested on assault charges, but upgraded charges are possible. It isn't clear whether he has an attorney and his number isn't listed.
