NY police: Man stabs parents, then is hit by train

NEW YORK – A man stabbed his mother to death and gravely wounded his father Monday in their home, then fled into a nearby subway station, jumped onto the tracks and was struck by an oncoming train, police said.

Ryan Devaney, 31, who was hospitalized in serious condition, is facing murder and attempted murder charges, police said. His parents were found on the front porch of their Brooklyn home. The mother died at a hospital and the father was listed in critical condition.

Calls to possible relatives were not returned, and no one answered the phone at the home Monday.

Police received an emergency call from a neighbor saying someone was injured and bleeding at the stately brick home in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood, located close to Prospect Park. When they arrived, they found Margaret Devaney, 57, stabbed in the eye and abdomen. Raymond Devaney, 70, had been stabbed in the throat.

Police said Margaret Devaney went out the front door covered in blood and called out to her neighbor, who came outside and saw the couple collapsed on the porch.

According to police, neighbors said they saw Ryan Devaney walking quickly from the home, his hands covered in blood. He told one passer-by that he had "done something bad," according to police, as he made his way to the subway station at 15th Street and Prospect Park West, where he jumped onto the tracks and was hit by a "G'' train during the morning rush hour.

Police believe Devaney was trying to kill himself. Witnesses told police they saw a burst of feathers from his down jacket above the tracks.

Service was suspended for about an hour at the height of rush hour on the "F'' and "G'' subway lines, normally clogged with commuters.

Devaney had a history of mental illness along with arrests on robbery and grand larceny charges, and there were prior restraining orders against him preventing him from seeing his father, police said. Authorities were called to the home at least nine times this year, with Devaney being hospitalized afterward several times.

There also were seven domestic incident reports taken at the home, though it was unclear who was accused of being the aggressor. It's also unclear if anyone else lived at the home.

A 4-inch black knife was recovered at the scene.
