A New Mexico sheriff says the first thing he saw at a crime scene on a remote ranch was a pile of ash and twisted metal.
Within hours, Guadalupe County Sheriff Michael Lucero learned that the wreckage was a charred travel trailer that belonged to an Oklahoma couple that prosecutors say were carjacked and shot to death.
Lucero testified Wednesday in the capital murder trial of John McCluskey, who is facing federal carjacking and murder charges in the 2010 deaths of Gary and Linda Haas of Tecumseh, Okla.
Prosecutors say the Haases were targeted by McCluskey, a fellow prison escapee and their accomplice at a rest stop near the Texas-New Mexico state line. After the shooting, the trailer was taken to a remote spot and burned, with the Haases bodies inside.
