A New Jersey man imprisoned for nearly two decades until his murder conviction was thrown out could take a final step to freedom.
Gerard Richardson is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon in Somerville. A judge gave prosecutors until Tuesday to decide whether they want to retry Richardson for the 1990s murder of Monica Reyes, whose body was found in a ditch in Bernards Township in central New Jersey.
Richardson was convicted in 1995 largely on bite-mark evidence taken from the victim's back.
Attorneys from the Innocence Project challenged the evidence, and it was determined the bite mark contained another man's DNA.
Richardson was released on bail in late October.
