ALBANY, N.Y -- Authorities say a 23-year-old man charged with raping an upstate New York girl was the subject of a missing child case that got national attention in the 1990s. He also was later convicted of a sex crime in Massachusetts.
The Times Union of Albany reports that Adam Croote is accused of attacking a 10-year-old girl he was babysitting at a home in Berne, outside Albany.
Croote was 2 when his Army soldier father shot and killed Croote's pregnant mother in Georgia. In 1992, Croote's maternal grandmother abducted him from his other grandmother. They were found three years later in Kansas.
Croote was photographed with President Bill Clinton in 1996 at the signing of an order involving missing children posters.
He was being held Thursday on rape and attempted murder charges. The Associated Press couldn't determine if he has a lawyer.
