A 25-year-old New York man was arrested Friday morning on charges that he tried to join an Al-Qaeda-related organization and conspired to commit murders overseas.
Authorities say Marcos Alonso Zea, as known as “Ali Zea,” was arrested Friday at his home in Brentwood, on Long Island.
Zea, an American citizen, is being held for arraignment in federal court in Central Islip, N.Y. It isn't clear who would represent him.
He's charged with conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, attempting to support terrorists and Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula known as Ansar al-Sharia, and obstruction of justice.
Federal prosecutors accuse Zea of planning to travel overseas to wage violent jihad on the perceived enemies of Islam, including the secular government in Yemen.
Zea, a resident of Brentwood, is the latest in a series of jihadist supporters from Long Island, including his co-conspirator from Babylon, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said in a statement.
"This arrest is a vivid reminder of the threat we continue to face from domestic Islamic terrorists," he said.
They say he flew to London en route to Yemen in January to join a group responsible for several terrorist attacks against the United States.
