Authorities have charged an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper with stealing more than $68,000 in weapons, ammunition and other items from a gun store.

Authorities say 28-year-old Spc. William David Devane was arrested Monday. He is based at Fort Bragg.

Detectives say Devane took nine semi-automatic rifles and seven semi-automatic handguns. Police did not say what Devane's motive was.

Cumberland County sheriff's department spokeswoman Debbie Tanna says Devane was found next door to the business, hiding on top of a van. He has been charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny of firearms and possession of stolen firearms.

Tanna says she doesn't know if Devane has an attorney. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
