Moments after the initial shots rang out Monday at a military facility in D.C., one worker in the building made sure to take a blind coworker before he exited the building.

Omar Grant, a civilian who works at the Navy Yard, counted five "unmistakable" gun blasts before he escorted a blind colleague from the premises, USA Today reported.

"I didn’t want to leave him behind," Grant told CBS News. "I saw that he was all by himself."

Grant reassured his colleague, named Linwood, and the two walked together, arm-in-arm, to safety, the report said.

"It was kind of hectic," Grant told USA Today. "Everyone just went."
