A Detroit mother has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a U.S. customs agent who fatally shot her 20-year-old son.
The complaint filed Thursday in federal court in Detroit names Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Mitchell Quinn and two Detroit police officers.
Authorities were seeking Terrance Kellom on an arrest warrant in 2015 at his father's home. Police have said Quinn shot Kellom after Kellom lunged at the agent with a hammer.
The lawsuit filed on behalf of Nelda Kellom contends that a search warrant was not presented when officers entered the house and that police reports of the shooting were falsified.
Prosecutors didn't charge Quinn and ruled he acted in self-defense.
Quinn's attorney, David Griem, says the criminal case was the first step leading to Thursday's civil lawsuit.
