Forensic experts are expanding outreach to Guatemalans in Los Angeles to try to identify victims of the country's decades-long civil war.
The Forensic Anthropology Foundation of Guatemala will meet with immigrants this week who want to share information about their missing relatives and give DNA samples in the hopes of finding their remains.
The move comes as the Guatemalan conflict takes center stage in a California courtroom.
Federal prosecutors will try an ex-Guatemalan soldier on charges of lying on his American citizenship application about his alleged role in a massacre in 1982. One of their witnesses is a man who learned his family was killed in the massacre through the DNA program.
In a letter, former soldier Jorge Sosa has said he wasn't in the village where the massacre occurred.
