CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. – Rescuers have pulled a man out of a remote ravine in Southern Oregon where he lay for two days after a fall.
Illinois Valley Fire Chief Dennis Hoke says the man is lucky to be alive. A couple went to the remote area on federal land outside Cave Junction to watch the sunrise Wednesday and heard the man yelling. Otherwise, he might never have been found.
Hoke says the man apparently was looking for a place to pan for gold. At the edge of a cliff, he dropped something. When he bent over, he fell and rolled a couple of hundred feet down the steep slope.
Hoke told The Grants Pass Daily Courier the man was severely dehydrated, and might have suffered neck and back injuries. He wasn't identified.
