A Staten Island man has denied charges in the death of a woman killed after a boat became detached from a trailer and hit her while she was riding a bicycle.
The Staten Island Advance reports (http://bit.ly/1rE8T4u ) 42-year-old Michael Khmil pleaded not guilty Monday to charges including second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the September death of 21-year-old Alexa Cioffi.
Authorities say the boat and trailer were being pulled by a sport utility vehicle. The boat and trailer became unhitched from the SUV as it changed lanes, hitting two cyclists. Cioffi died at a hospital.
Prosecutors say the boat was too heavy for the vehicles transporting it and that Khmil didn't properly secure the trailer.
Khmil's lawyer couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
