Man accused of terror plot wants Mich. trial moved

DETROIT – A Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a plane as it approached Detroit in 2009 wants his trial moved out of Michigan.

In a court filing Friday, a lawyer assisting Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO'-mahr fah-ROOK' ahb-DOOL'-moo-TAH'-lahb) said he can't get a fair trial in Michigan. Anthony Chambers says the 24-year-old faces an "overall hostility."

Abdulmutallab is charged with trying to ignite explosives in his underwear on an Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight with nearly 300 people aboard. Passengers pounced on him and put out the flames on Christmas Day 2009.

Abdulmutallab also is asking a judge to throw out statements made while he was treated at University of Michigan hospital. His lawyer says he was interrogated without being read his Miranda rights and was sedated. Trial is set for Oct. 4.
