A Los Angeles police officer has been charged with smuggling a Mexican man into the country in the trunk of an SUV.
A federal complaint filed Monday says Carlos Quezada Jr. tried to enter the U.S. at San Diego's Otay Mesa port of entry. He and a female passenger were arrested Saturday night after an X-ray machine alerted border inspectors to a Mexican man hiding in the spare tire area of the Nissan Juke.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection identified Quezada as a 34-year-old Los Angeles police officer. His 31-year-old companion is also charged with smuggling.
Officer Rosario Herrera, a Los Angeles police spokeswoman, says the department is aware of the arrest but has no additional comment.
The suspects are at a San Diego jail before their initial court appearance.
