With the 2020 presidential race still too close to call and activists marching in cities across the U.S., Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has activated the state's National Guard in an effort to help local authorities with "widespread violence" that erupted in Portland, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.
Portland authorities declared a riot around 10 p.m. EST, according to the sheriff's office. At least eight people had been arrested a half-hour later. A ninth arrest was announced later, and with the riot still active, more were possible.
Protesters around the country had warned of additional demonstrations if President Trump loses the election but fails to concede to Joe Biden or challenges the results.
Videos shared to social media of demonstrations in New York City showed police and activists in heated confrontations. The NYPD announced about 50 arrests related to the protests.

Police in Minneapolis closed traffic on Interstate 94 after protesters marched onto the highway, and demonstrators in Portland had reportedly stopped traffic as well.
After the sun went down on the West Coast, police in Los Angeles declared an unlawful assembly and ordered protesters to disperse.
And in Phoenix, protesters from both sides of the aisle gathered outside the Maricopa County Recorder's Office, upset about the ongoing vote count there. A small number of them made it inside the building after posing as journalists but were quickly escorted out by security, KSAZ reported.
