Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say they're embarrassed after an M-16 rifle has gone missing from the department's arms.
Spokesman Steve Whitmore told the Los Angeles Times Tuesday that the department doesn't know how it could have happened, but it's wrong.
In an internal email obtained by the Times, Assistant Sheriff Todd Rogers told department supervisors to turn over every rock to find the weapon.
The weapon was among those the department receives through a program that distributes the federal government's excess property. The program is suspended for the LA department.
Whitmore says the department is drawing up new policies to avoid lost weapons in the future. The program will document every time a person handles a weapon.
