LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear says he supports having two Iraqis face terrorism-related charges at Guantanamo Bay rather than in his state's courts.
The Democrat's comments on Thursday come after some leading Kentucky Republicans, including his opponent in the November election, urged federal officials to send the two men to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
The governor said in a short statement that he's "fine" with sending the suspects to Guantanamo Bay. He says his main concern is to "get them out of Kentucky." Beshear says he has reached out to federal authorities to ensure that Kentuckians aren't put at risk.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said recently the two suspects should be subject to the same system as combatants caught on a battlefield.
